Kalamkari is the ancient art of hand-drawing and hand-painting with natural dyes — the name comes from kalam (pen) and kari (work). Its flowing temple scenes, tree-of-life panels and mythological narratives make it one of India's most storied art forms. At BestOfBharat, our Kalamkari collection brings this heritage to your walls as gallery-quality, hand-framed pieces, ready to hang.
Kalamkari is created by drawing with a bamboo or date-palm pen and filling in with natural, plant-based dyes, often over many painstaking stages. It is known for fine outlines, earthy indigo-mustard-rust palettes, and dense, narrative compositions drawn from mythology and nature.
Kalamkari flourished in Andhra Pradesh, in two main traditions: the temple-centred, free-hand Srikalahasti style, and the block-influenced Machilipatnam style. Historically it decorated temple cloths and scrolls that told stories from the epics to devotees.
Common subjects include the Tree of Life (growth and interconnection), scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, deities such as Krishna and Ganesha, peacocks and lotus florals. The art was traditionally devotional and educational, so each panel usually tells a story.
Our collection reproduces classic Kalamkari compositions — Tree of Life, temple and mythological panels, and floral motifs — on archival-grade material, hand-framed and delivered ready to hang. Each design is offered in multiple sizes and frame finishes to suit living rooms, puja rooms and entryways.
Kalamkari's warm, earthy palette suits living rooms and dining rooms beautifully, while devotional pieces are ideal for the puja room. Its traditional character also makes an entryway feel rooted and welcoming.
Hang at eye level, around 57–60 inches from the floor, and let a detailed Kalamkari panel anchor the wall against a plain, warm-toned background. Wooden or antique-gold frames complement its heritage palette, and it pairs naturally with brass, cane and handloom textures.
Each design is printed on archival-grade material for colour longevity, hand-framed in our own facility and quality-checked before dispatch. Every piece is non-toxic, ready to hang, and shipped safely across India.
You get handcrafted-quality reproductions of a centuries-old tradition, premium framing, a choice of sizes and pan-India delivery, from a catalogue spanning India's richest art forms. Explore the Kalamkari collection to bring pen-and-dye storytelling to your home.
