Pichwai (also spelled Pichhwai) is one of India's most revered devotional art forms — intricate depictions of Shrinathji, the child form of Lord Krishna, traditionally painted on cloth to hang behind the deity at the Nathdwara temple in Rajasthan. The word Pichwai comes from the Sanskrit pichh (back) and wai (hanging) — devotional cloth paintings created to hang behind the idol of Shrinathji. Rendered in painstaking detail with natural pigments and gold, they depict Krishna surrounded by cows, lotuses, peacocks and gopis, and are often themed around festivals such as Annakut and Sharad Purnima.
The tradition originated in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, in the 17th century, created by the artist community around the Shrinathji temple. Each traditional work is hand-painted by trained artisans, a discipline passed down through generations of families devoted to the craft.
