Canvas paintings, and why canvas suits them

Canvas is woven cotton stretched over a wooden frame. The weave has a fine grain that holds ink softly, so brush marks read much as they do on a painted surface. There is no glass, so no glare from a window or a ceiling spotlight. Canvas is light for its size, and a large one hangs on a single hook.

Canvas paintings across the whole catalogue

Every artwork in the catalogue is offered on canvas, so the range here is wide. It spans classical reproductions, courtly Indian miniature painting and village folk traditions. There are impressionist landscapes, botanical studies, Art Deco geometry, minimalist line work and bold contemporary abstracts. Palettes run from muted ivory and sage through deep indigo to warm ochre. Formats include small squares, tall portraits, wide panoramic shapes and large statement sizes.

Where canvas works in a home

Canvas hangs well above a sofa, where the absence of glass keeps the image clear at an angle. Bedrooms, home offices and stairwells work for the same reason. Humid and coastal homes are kinder to canvas than to glazed frames, because there is no glass to fog. A corridor takes a run of two or four smaller canvases at eye level.

Choosing a size

Measure the wall first, then aim to cover about two thirds of the width of the furniture below. Above a three-seater sofa that usually means 36 inches or wider. A study or bedside wall reads well at 18 to 24 inches. For a tall stairwell, a portrait format carries better than a wide one. If you are caught between two sizes, choose the larger.

Every artwork here is an archival print, hand-framed to order and delivered ready to hang — made in India.
